Katelios
As today was our last full day on Kefalonia, and Captain Vangelis' cruise around the island was already full, we decided to splurge on a speedboat trip to Katelios, a nearby tiny resort that had once been a fishing village.
The trip took 15 minutes, and was very refreshing. Another couple were waiting for the boat, and it struck me that we were the only ones we'd met so far who were on their first visit to Kefalonia. Most were on their third to seventh! We landed and checked out the tavernas for lunch, then headed off down the one street for coffee. We ended up at the most expensive coffee shop, with sofas to match, because Steve wanted to blip the swallows flitting in and out! I went to the loo and as I waited. I spotted a room with a smallish pool table.
'Hire the table for 8 Euros per hour' was the legend.
I am thinking of getting a pool table....
The beaches were beautiful. CleanSteve has already blipped the seaweed collector. I waded out to sea for miles. But all my pano shots came out wonky, with a convex curve. Disturbing.
So we went for lunch, after I'd had a swim and splashed Steve, at Captain Jerry's taverna. I wanted red mullet, for old times' sake, but it was explained to me that, although the boat was lying not far out, it could not come into harbour, as the water was too shallow. So there were only two tiny red mullet, smaller than a person's hand. I had Sea Bass instead, and it was delicious.
I was intrigued by Captain Jerry's eyes. They were blue. I could not stop staring, and in the end I asked if he was Greek. He said he was an Athenian. He said he'd been asked about his eyes many times. Oops! it was odd for me, because when I was living in Veria, in the North of Mainland Greece, children used to queue up to look at my then-partner's eyes, which were also blue. Non-brown eyes are not common in Greece.
This huge cactus was on the edge of the eating area, which abutted the beach. I can't show you the scale, but it was massive. As we waited the for the bus back to Skala, we chatted to two young women from Belgrade, who had spent 24 hours getting to Kefalonia by coach. I felt lucky to be contemplating a fairly easy journey home, but sad to be leaving so soon.
As the waitress in our evening taverna said,
"These last nights are not so good, First nights are better".
We shall return....
