Canongate Bridge, Jedburgh
This used to be the only way across the Jed for travellers heading to or from the Carter Bar and the border between Scotland and England.
Now the road snakes across the river via four or five bridges and this one is only for pedestrians. Once a year it plays an important role in the life of the Royal Burgh, when the Festival Day cavalcade of around 250 horses and riders, all dressed to the nines, fords the river and gallops up the far bank.
If you want the best view of the fun, and possible ducking of some unfortunates, you have to get yourself onto the bridge early and stay there, so missing much of the rest of the action. It's a hard choice, and it will soon be that time of year again. I've never managed to be on the bridge, maybe this time?
