Catch the name
Spot the truck is a recurring pastime each time we are making a long journey by car. Not any truck, mind you. But the distinctive liveried green trucks of Stobart.
So each time we head north to the Scottish borders you will find my wife and I competing with each other as to who can spot the most.
As possibly the biggest transport operation in the country, and now extending into many other allied fields, it’s perhaps not surprising that motorway journeys always seem to produce what appears to be a glut of them as we head north.
We do not often get close enough to catch the names, yet the naming of the trucks is a recognised tradition. The story goes that the first four trucks owned by Eddie Stobart were named after female personalities at the time. Today each of the trucks, and some of the allied interests, bear female names. And apparently there is a three year waiting list to get a name attached to a vehicle.
Maybe we should extend our motorway pastime to recording names as well as how many vehicles we can log in a journey. Shame that we catch no more than a glimpse of those in the other carriageway heading in the opposite direction.
Or change our criteria to simply logging how many different names we encounter!
