Please take a banana

For Zhaoyi Kang, this installation "work derives from 'banana' as a metaphor for Asian immigrant in Canada.  As a Canadian citizen but born in Beijing China, the distinction of identity is a problematic one for Kang, no longer Chinese enough for those in China, and with imperfect English, not yet a native Canadian".

Having myself lived in five different countries, this feeling of no longer fitting in anywhere anymore resonated.  .

I brought over a homeless street friend, and then two more First Nations friends with the hope they would / could engage with the artist, something I see as essential to moving into community,  Regrettably, for me, his installation involved him sitting with no other human contact although others were invited to take away a banana and hence tear down the wall.
