Late shift
"I'm hungry!"
"Well you'll just have to wait till your Mum/Dad gets back. She/he's late with the fish supper tonight."
It's that time of year again. The cliffs are a-clamour with call and response as parent birds attempt to satisfy the appetites of their insatiable offspring. A razorbill family occupies this particular crevice each year but this is the first time I have seen their (single) chick which usually remains well hidden. After only 18 days in the nursery, and barely a quarter of its adult size, it takes to the water still unfledged and is fed and guarded by its father until it can manage independently. Razorbills don't function well on land and are not expert fliers either: the sea is their element.
