Monumenta 2016: Empires
Always fascinating to see what comes out, when an artist receives the opportunity to fill the enormous space of the Grand Palais in Paris. This year it is the Chinese/French artist Huang Yong Ping who especially developed this installation for Monumenta.
It is about globalization, power and the cycle of glory and destruction. The exposition is made up of three elements: freight containers, a bicorne (inspired by the one worn by Napoleon at the battle of Eylau) and a snake, slithering over the work, mouth wide open. Impressive to see this 980 tonne piece of art, but honestly it was a rather short visit to the place. Not comparable with the Monumenta 2014, which left a much deeper impression on us.
What else today:
- Met M for breakfast
- Bit of shopping
- Having the impression that only few people and tourists were on the street
- Would have been the 80th birthday of my dad
- Switzerland won the first football match
- Enjoyed a good dinner in the 17th arrondissement
