I couldn't leave it just like that without a little "research".    The original French is 'Qu'ils mangent de la brioche'..... it is attributed to Marie-Antoinette, but the evidence is thin, and it may more properly belong to Marie-Thérèse (1638-83), the wife of Louis XIV.    It didn't stop them chopping M-A's head off though.
