Hard Seats
A trip back to the 19th century. We walked along the Douglas promenade to the terminus where the horse tramway (which dates from 1876) meets the Electric Railway (1893).
We travelled on hard wooden seats in open-sided carriages for a numbing 17 miles from Douglas to Ramsey, stopping off mid-route at Laxey to travel up the Snaefell Mountain Railway (1895) to the 2034 foot high summit.
On arriving back in Laxey, we then climbed to the top of Lady Isabella (see extra) - the largest working water wheel in the world. Built in 1854, the 22 metre diameter wheel was used to pump water from the Laxey mines.
The blip is the Mountain Railway Tramcar No1 approaching the summit.
Back at the hotel now. At least the bed is soft.
