London Olympics Opening Ceremony 2012
Steve and I ventured into London today specifically to go and see the Olympic Ceremony live on the huge televisions in Hyde Park with thousands of other like minded people.
We had a great walk passed London Eye, Westminster, GreenPark, Buckingham Palace and were just in awe of our great city. Everyone was in great spirits, fantastic to see our services coming together and had a very celebratory feel.
After about 5 miles, we got to Hyde Park and decided to kill some time and go for an early dinner at Harvey Nicks. Walked back to the event area and were pretty shocked at what we found.
We knew there was the main event of the big concert going ahead and needed tickets for that, but it was heavily advertised that all parks were free to watch the giant screens. There was nothing for the public outside the secured area, not even the usual drink and food vans, which were in the secure area. Even if we just wanted to view the screens, and weren't fazed by the concert, we still would've had to pay £60-70 a ticket per person!!
We were frankly disgusted and dammed disappointed that there was no thought put into it for the community. What happened to Boris and David saying that they wanted everyone to be a part of the event? Only if you had £60 burning a hole in your pocket.
Just this week it was announced in the papers that families were staying at home this summer as couldn't afford to take their kids to Legoland, cinema etc. I'm not sure how they could justify it, and know that there are plenty of disappointed people in London right now. Even at £20 a head wouldve been more than reasonable.
We made a negative into a positive and walked down Oxford Street back to Embankment to our favourite place to have a good few cocktails. It was a really lovely evening spent together chilling out and having quality time together.
This blip is when the red arrows zoomed past the Eye and Big Ben and I got the plumes of smoke they left behind. The sun was setting at that point too, such a dreamy shot.
Now we are I'm bed; exhausted after walking probably around 12-15 miles easy. Will catch up on the actual ceremony tomorrow morning in the comfort of our sofa. Wonder if that's what we should've done in the first place!!
