Portugese diary Lisbon Day 2
Woke up to sun streaming in and when looked out there was another cruise ship docked. We arranged to meet Gillian at the Hotel Santiago for breakfast, sitting outdoors in the shady sun. Last September the granola fruit and yogurt was so tasty but they have changed it to fruit purée - very disappointing! We chatted about where to go and decided to go out to the Parque das Nacoes (park of Nations) former site of Expo 98. We got the Metro out after a wander and a sit at Rossio Square, watching the comings and goings and enjoying the sun. We wander along the promenade and then stopped for lunch at a waterside Cafe. Decided to have a ride on the cable car which took us quite close to the magnificent Vasco da Gama bridge. Another wander and then more coffee and cake. Just as well doing loads of walking to work off the many cake stops!
There are a lot of futuristic buildings around this area in contrast to the narrow precipitous streets of old Lisbon. There is also fountains bursting into life along walkways which I can image kids enjoying in the hot summer months. There was also a big Anthony Gormley statue of a tree with cast iron legs...
We got the metro back and stopped off at a Cafe overlooking Rossio Square and had more coffee and cake then headed back to our places to get ready for going out at night.
Decided to go to a restaurant that had Fado playing and had a nice meal and some good observations and chat with fellow diners! The waitress was run off her feet but did a good job keeping us fed and watered. There was even a marriage proposal in the restaurant indoors.
Another fun filled day in beautiful Lisbon.
