Queen's own

Maidstone has been a garrison town through much of its history. It is strategically placed on the river Medway and the Archbishop's Palace is built next to what was a river crossing before the modern bridges were built. To celebrate the military history there are two statues outside the museum and I've blipped the other one, a Gurkha, in the past. This statue is of a soldier of the Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment who were based at Invicta barracks in Maidstone from their creation in 1881 to 1961 when they merged with The Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment).

Although the barracks have also gone it is possible to have a drink in what was the officers' mess - it survives as a pub.
