Bridge 82 Trent and Mersey Canal
Day 7 of our present Solace trip. One of the interesting things for me about the canal is the way bridges are so varied, differing curves to the arches, different materials and some quite ornate. This is also known as Salt Bridge, because it is near the village of Salt.
The arches of the bridge were built with pride in workmanship and an eye to the aesthetic which seems to be sadly lacking today.
Salt or Selte as it was known then is listed in the doomsday book as "having land for 4 ploughs, a mill, 12 acres of Meadow and 4 of wood". Currently its main claim to fame seems to be an old Inn (The Hollybush) with a Thatched roof the dates back until at least to the start of Inn licensing in 1660-65 claiming to be the second ever licensed. It must have been a reasonably old even then.
Sadly today we moored in the marina prior to leaving Solace bright and early tomorrow morning.
