Wide Skies Film Festival continues
The first part of today disappeared as the usual routine jobs were performed.
This afternoon, I watched the Andy Murray match at Queen's. There was some superb tennis. Yet again Andy made us anxious as he dropped a set, but he did win in the end. I'm not sure I can stand the tension tomorrow.
The imaginative Wide Skies Film Festival included the film Mustang which was made in Turkey and is about 5 sisters who are locked in the family home - for their own protection - until suitable husbands can be found for them. It's beautifully shot and a lot of the grimmer episodes happen off camera. The 5 actresses are so natural together - with their limbs entwinted like a litter of puppies at various times.
The girls deal with the prospect of marriage in different ways. The film is remarkably uplifting. At times it was very slow, but I think that was intentional as they showed their boredom in their confinement to the house.
I was able to take Mum because there were subtitles.
I think one of the things about it that jarred - if that's the correct word - was that it was so understated. We are accustomed to seeing violence on the screen with no holds barred. Here is was behind closed doors. Ultimately there is empowerment for some of the girls.
This film was nominated for the festival by the Northumberland service for people who suffer domestic violence. They have women's workers, a men's worker, a new service for children and a worker for teens who are stalked. So glad they are there.
In the corner of the cinema cafe I found two models that attracted me. The light was almost impossible because of the sunshine streaming in the window, hence the mono image. It's good to see that these two have been sold.
Margret came with us to the film and back here for a meal afterwards.
