Olympic men's road race at 6km, Putney
We had an early start today, to make our way out to Putney to watch the Olympic men's cycling road race passing through. We arrived early enough to secure a reasonable location on the bend in the road by Putney railway station. This was the day that the UK was hoping for a golden start to the Olympics, with a possible gold medal for Mark Cavendish but, in the end, Team GB's tactics were out-fixed by a successful breakaway and a gold medal performance by Khazakstan's Alexandr Vinokurov. Still, we loved our long-awaited first taste of Olympic action on the streets of London. There were massive crowds, everyone was wonderfully good-natured and the sun shone brightly. And, as you can see, the peloton, however briefly spied, was a buzzing, colourful thing that set the crowd's voices alight!
