Little life
The peonies were born
wide-eyed and gorgeous
one week ago,
danced their brief
and riotous adolescence
in uncertain sun.
In early adulthood
they were wind-torn,
rain-battered, weighted
to the ground.
Now, around my age,
they decay,
the inevitable ahead.
(Meanwhile the silk ones
are safely back inside.)
