DENDROCOPOS MAJOR
We must be doing something right with our bird feeders, as we are now getting a pair of Great Spotted Woodpeckers coming to feed and then going on to our cherry tree.
This is not a particularly good photograph, as it was taken through the glass door in our conservatory and it was raining, but it’s great to see them. Once the magpies, pigeons, starlings and sparrows have left the feeders, then the woodpeckers come into the garden, and despite the heavy rain, they are still coming to feed.
At the time of typing this, there are four magpies in the garden, parents and two young, so don’t think there is much chance of seeing the woodpeckers for a while.
I found this quote, and it has been so true of me this Spring - I have definitely learned patience, from our Great Tits and now from the Woodpeckers - reminded me of a saying: “God works in a mysterious way…..” but can't think of a better way to learn this.
“Sometimes I think that the point of birdwatching
is not the actual seeing of the birds,
but the cultivation of patience.
Of course, each time we watch,
there's a certain amount of expectation
we'll see something,
maybe even a species we've never seen before,
and that it will fill us with light.
But even if we don't see anything remarkable -
and sometimes that happens -
we are filled with light anyway.”
