An ugly bug

I was dead heading the geraniums on the balcony when I spotted this bug. I don't know what it is but if I manage to post an extra, it's the underside of the same bug. I would welcome an ID. It is Butterfly heaven here in the meadows surrounding the house. I was chasing around after them this morning. I have plenty of time to post some photos on another day.
Having got thoroughly soaked yesterday, we waited for today's storm but it didn't happen today until 5pm and we were in the car then.
I have managed to post yesterday's extra now.
