Sun halo
Morris dancing in Lowick this evening. Half way through a dance, I noticed a rather unusual 'rainbow' in the sky above the pub, and when the dance was finished took a shot or two. It was still there when we finished dancing about 20 minutes later, and as we passed the pub on the way to the car, I took a shot of it around the sun (see extras).
After the dancing, we had all been invited back to J&A's for soup and refreshment. The main blip was taken just outside their house, not far from Lowick, looking west. Amazing sight!
It's a sun halo and is, apparently, an optical phenomenon caused by refraction (splitting of light) and reflection (glints of light) from ice crystals in the atmosphere.
