Pit marker

Taking advantage of the good weather to blow away the cobwebs gathering over the days of limited activity, we took a walk along the old railway line from Ormiston to Pencaitland under blue skies and fluffy white clouds.

This stone is not far from our starting point, indicating the location of a coal mine, now closed, the only pit belonging to the Woodhall company. Further along is another, similar stone, for the Meadow Pit, which includes the enigmatic reference to 'splint and parrot', (which I take to be types of coal seam - I really don't know).

After a browse round the ancient gravestones at Pencaitland church we walked back following the path by the Tyne water, passing by fields of ripening barley and through woods, just reaching the car as the rain began.
