Erosion

This afternoon my son and I went down to the Waimakariri riverbed a few kilometres upstream from the Gorge Bridge. With the mountains cast in shadow the most noticeable feature of the landscape was the eroded bluffs on the north side of the river. Easily seen is the line between the greywacke shingle and the clay-bound shingle. In large different layers of large stones are visible. The mature pines on top left give an idea of the height.

Last time I went there it was summer and teeming with life- birds, butterflies, insects and spiders. Today I saw three birds and one spider. It's a harsh environment in winter.
