Polling Place

When did a Polling Station become merely a Polling Place? And why are the bins always out when we go, to spoil a perfectly composed photo of it? 
So we duly attended and cast our votes, having verified our names as those on the polling cards (just as well we can read...) and are agog to know the results resigned to the outcome. At least the bickering is over.
