The Rainbow's Promise

It was pouring down rain and the sun was shining brightly when I left work on this day. I looked and looked for a rainbow but did not see one. I knew it must be there somewhere. But alas, not for me.

But later in the evening, at home, as the rains continued and the world headed toward dusk, my husband shouted, "THERE'S YOUR RAINBOW!" And so we rain out onto the front porch like a pair of kids and laughed and chortled and enjoyed it thoroughly. And I took a few pictures, of course. :-)

One of the last times that it rained, I ran out in my bathing suit and Crocs and danced all around the yard and gardens. There's nothing so lovely as dancing in the soft summer rain. When I came back in, my husband was sitting on the front porch watching, clapping his hands: "Do it again! Do it again!"

On this evening, I didn't heed the call of the rain to come dancing. Maybe next time I will. I thoroughly recommend it. But I did see the blue sky behind the clouds. And I remembered the beloved Bible story of Noah and the Great Flood, and the Rainbow Covenant, God's promise to the world.

The rain is ending. Clearing is coming. There's the promise of better weather. Blue skies behind the clouds. But could there be a better moment than this? The moment of shining color that is the rainbow's time to dance. It lives where the rain mingles with the light. It is the place of grace and mercy. This is where the promise lives. . . .

There is only one song that I want to use to celebrate this glorious rainbow, this promise. And that is this: Israel Kamakawiwo'Ole, with the medley of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and Wonderful World.
