Volucella inflata
What a momentous day! whichever way you voted you have to agree today was a day that will go down in history. I am saddened that there has been so much bitching and bad feeling following the result, it is what it is, what we need to do now is unite and make our future together work.
It has also been a momentous day because I found a colony of these little beauties this afternoon!
I love the Volucella genus of hoverflies, there are only 5 UK species, and they are all really quite robust!
This one Volucella inflata is probably the one I see least, as it is fairly uncommon even in it's southern stronghold. It is superficially similar to V. Pellucens a much more widely distributed species but is bright orange and black whereas pellucens is white and black.
I have included a shot of another male Emperor dragonfly that hatched today in my extras, it has the same shimmery wings as the common darter from yesterday.
