twinned with trumpton

By MrFT

Went to bed with the BBC telling me that there exit polls showed a likelihood of a Remain majority; woke to the opposite. Took me at least 3 minutes for this to sink in, such was the disbelief.

School run; last time I see the boys for 3 weeks. We went for football cards first; and Alex was clingy - that NEVER happens. Last day of P1 / P4 respectively.

Then to W Granton Road to get Barry; we had a plan to dodge showers and thunderstorms in the Cairngorms.

We sent the journey discussing events; in many ways very therapeutic and cathartic.

And then - from Linn of Dee we headed west to the White Bridge; avoiding citizens of the United Kingdom - no wait - Great Britain and into wilderness. Sun breaking through the clouds as we marched at a decent pace alongside the Dee. And after 4 and a bit miles, we struck out off the beaten track up the SE slopes of Beinn Bhrotain; a big lump of a thing; easy at first but endless in its steps to the top. A creditable 3 hours 10 to the top; with epic views to Lochnagar off to the SE; Beinn a Ghlo to the south and much more importantly the views to the Larry Grew and the big hills was stunning.
Through a boulderfield we descended to then climb onto the less impressive Monadth Mor; an extremely pleasant mile of high level strolling on the flat.
As we touched and turned, the promised dark clouds appeared; and within 20 minutes of departing the summit had wisps of cloud across it and shortly after the crackle of lightning was noted. Hastening, we contoured around the summit of Bheinn Bhrotain rather than a full reascent and as we headed off the upper slopes we noted another thunderstorm off to the east. Heading slowly our way; fierce and ferocious; immense bursts of forked lightning sparking away fiercely.

A nervous hour as we were still high and with no cover, but eventually we passed slowly as great ocean vessels do; slipping slowly past each other at a discreet distance we caught the peripheral downpour but it lasted for 20 minutes; not bad considering.

And then the long long trudge out. Tired and footsore; and as we hit the final 2 miles the rain ramped it up to a steady downpour. Still, not enough to dampen what was a fabulous day (at least in mountaineering terms)

20-odd miles; 7 and half hours; 2 Munros less to do; 105 are left. And I hope by next weekend to have a two figure number to compleat. We'll see. Not an easy day; not difficult either but I know I've been out and about.

The final twist in the tale - they're repairing the road at Spittal of Glenshee; road closed from 8pm - 6am.

So 99 miles to get there; back along Royal Deeside and beyond; a chip shop stop on the seafront at Stonehaven (not often featured on the Munro round) and finally after dropping Barry I got in at 1. 176 to get back. Wired but exhausted.

A hot bath to soothe aching bones and finally dropped off at 2.

Brexit - My disappointment is this - that in 3 recent votes, the majority of my fellow humans in this country have displayed a selfishness and greed that's not attractive. That we have enough 'I'm all Right Jacks' in the country probably means we live in an affluent country with a good standard of living - great! But that those that have want more at the expense of those who don't and to actively seek to lessen what the have not's have is depressing. I always said I hated Thatcher's destruction of Britain's sense of community and instilled a Me ME ME!! attitude. And it seems that's her greatest legacy. That we could care less about the greater good, the wider picture. We have become largely a nation of the lazy and the greedy and in many cases both. There's no compassion, no caring, no collective responsibility any more. And that saddens me immensely.
Now, after a day of contemplation in the hills, my thoughts are now on 'what the hell can we salvage from this unholy unmitigated disaster? There will be positives; find them and engage.
