small and white but beautiful backlit
...it was a delight to see the forecast this morning and see that the heavy rain showers had been postponed. After breakfast, we took our family visitors to Badbury Rings, where I was hoping to find at least one new butterfly for my Big Butterfly Count series. There were the usual Marbled Whites, Skippers, Meadow Browns, Dark Green Fitillaries and a good showing of Chalkhill Blues, but I have already blipped all of those (except for Meadow Brown, which I am keeping in reserve for when nothing else presents itself).
At this point, I was not too worried as we then headed to Kingston Lacy for the afternoon. Surely something interesting would be flying in the park or gardens. In short, no there wasn't!
Consequently, as soon as we arrived back home, I sprinted up to Durlston to photograph a Meadow Brown. I was just walking back when this Small White Pieris rapae landed on a Spear Thistle Cirsium vulgare and looked quite stunning with the heavy backlighting. Great news - I still have the option of a Meadow Brown for later...
