Filling up the Silo
This morning the truck arrived with our load of fertiliser that we had ordered to give the grass a bit of a kick start.
This picture shows the fertiliser being 'blown' up into the silo. Only certain trucks can deliver fertiliser that has to go up into the silo, as the truck has to have a special blowing motor - this truck is based in Westport, so it had to go to Nelson, pick up the load and then return here to empty its load. It takes about an hour to blow the fertiliser into the silo - you can see the truck driver overseeing it all happen.
Only granulated fertiliser can be put into the silo, as the powdered type (like superphosphate) compacts in the silo and is difficult to get out.
When Farmerboy comes to wanting to use the fertiliser, he backs in the fertiliser spreader under the silo, slides open the door and hey presto, the fertiliser falls through the white sleeve you can see, into the spreader.
