A night on the town
Backblipping this one.
We went into Victoria to see the Tedeschi Trucks Band. We'd been looking forward to the concert since we got the tickets in January. It started at 7:30, so we went to Pagliacci's, a classic restaurant, for an early dinner. Turned out it was Happy Hour, so...bonus!... we had a nice bottle of wine at 25% off the regular price. The seafood lasagne and side salad were excellent, and neither of us could manage dessert.
The concert was sold out. The band got a standing ovation as soon as it came on stage. Wow - what an outstanding collection of musicians and singers! We were treated to "...two 75-minute sets of soul-boogie stew..." (Mike Devlin review, Times Colonist) and loved every minute of it. At intermission, an older woman came up to us and said, "You look like normal people. What do you think of this?" We both responded enthusiastically and asked her what she thought. She hated it. Some people she had come with left, and she and her partner were going to stay but not sure if they'd last until the end. "Just noise, only noise!" she said. Yes, it was loud, as concerts of this kind usually are. She figured that everyone in the audience must be stoned. They stayed, and at the end after the encore, she told us that she'd enjoyed the second half more. As Mike Devlin wrote at the conclusion of his review, "You likely had to know the group, and its music of choice, to fully appreciate the beauty of this particular performance." Not everyone's cup of tea, but definitely mine, and I was blown away by the talent of every single member of the 12 people in the band.
G and I have often thought it would be awesome to be in a band together, like Trucks and Tedeschi. We have a guitar, and although we both took lessons, neither of us can play it. I was getting on pretty well with playing around on it again...until I started to blip. There's only so much time in a day! And I didn't inherit my mum's voice, unfortunately. She COULD sing! I love singing, in private. You never know...maybe we will get our act together! :)
