Caen Hill (Saturday 2nd July 2016)
I found myself in Devizes because I had a need of a fresh Eat Square jumbo sausage roll, but tragically there were none to be had. There was some kind of festival going on at Devizes Wharf. It was thronging with people and there was a live band. I was after something quieter though, so having it checked it out I moved on to the Caen Hill lock flight.
I'd learned on the previous week's visit that the swan family I'd been keeping tabs on had been relocated further down the lock flight so this time I kept going down the towpath until I found them. They were at Lock 36, the Peter Lindley-Jones Lock, and the two cygnets were much, much bigger, and fully in the so-called "ugly duckling" stage. They glided off to the side pond and I followed them on a path between two ponds (visible near the top of the blip).
They can be seen in the Extra, confronting a dog.
From the path I could see a heron perched in the next pond, next to Lock 35, and to my surprise, another pair of adult swans, semingly tolerated by the cob and his charges.
In other news, I have learned that the Marlborough water voles are alive and well, but have moved house to the other side of the bank for safety.
