Gelato girls
Zoomed off this morning to collect a small fridge for the attic. Once we got it home, upstairs and filled with a few goodies, it was a case of rushing round putting the finishing touches to the accommodation prior to our guests’ arrival. They turned up well and happy, having loved their time in Brasilia and not been too impressed by Goiania, and after a coffee and settling in, set off to explore the surroundings.
They weren’t back by the time HH and I went down the road for supper and were still out when we got home – let’s hope they’re enjoying themselves and not in any trouble (always a bit of a worry).
Had to stop at the gelato place on our way home, and found that one of the girls has returned to the northeast because she’s pregnant. We’ll miss her cheerful welcome and hope, as her friend does, that she’ll be back one day. The three girls working there now are all from the northeast of Brazil, so a long way from home. They do a 12-hour shift, ending at 11 pm. We asked how long it takes them to get back to their digs and whether it’s scary at that time of night. The one we know has a 2 – 3 hour bus journey, but says she’s most frightened waiting at the bus stop, usually alone. It’s a tough life and so many have these long journeys every day – like our Hurricane Maria/Miracle Maria, who has 4-6 hours travel time each time she comes to us, though at least she travels in daylight.
