Purple Coneflower center showing the paleae... Definition: One of the chaffy scales or bractlets growing on the receptacle of many compound flowers, as the Coreopsis, sunflower and in this case the Eastern Purple Coneflower Echinacea purpurea.  So tuck 'paleae' away for the next time you play Scrabble! :)
