Rabbit Contemplates the Land of Plenty

The latest news is that the small rabbit who came to visit the meadow the other evening has continued to hang out around our yard. This is good news, for we have been so lonely for rabbits.

My husband handles the mowing in our yard, and he is one who believes in letting the grass grow a bit so the clover can take over. When the clover is blooming, the bees adore it so. We like to help them out. Anything for the bees!

My husband's strategy is to mow the clover slowly, when he mows it at all, to give the bees time to leave before the mower blades get there. "Watch your step," he tells me, as we are outside chasing lightning bugs at dusk; "Don't step on the bees."

And so it was that on this day, the clover was long and luxurious and inviting. And the grass was green, and growing longer by the day. And the yard was sunny in some spots, and shady in others. What more choices could a rabbit want or need? Welcome to the land of plenty, rabbit; we sure hope you stay!

The tune: Bob Dylan's cover of a Woody Guthrie classic, Pastures of Plenty.
