The lending library

Housed in our 'town hall', recipient of random gifts and with zero budget it's basically a meeting-cum-storeroom with bookshelves. If they so wish, villagers can come in to read during open hours or borrow a book to read at home. There is no catalogue to speak of and no library tickets. For the most part however the books remain on the shelves because local Greeks don't tend to bother reading books. There is an American woman of Greek ancestry who visits the village every summer and does what she can to organise things but with no budget and little interest from locals it's not much more than a personal hobby. A few novels in English and German have been donated but most of the books are Greek reference books. A generator sits conveniently behind the desk and a heap of empty cardboard boxes beside the entrance door. I am not sure what lurks within the plastic bag on a chair, perhaps discarded clothing.
