Sir John Soanes
On the first Tuesday of each month the Sir John Soanes museum is open in the evening by candle light and so my friend V and l ventured down into town on a lovely summer eve.
This is a distinctly eccentric museum filled with over 50,000 individual pieces collected in what appears, to me, a rather 'magpie' fashion, although non the less fascinating for that fact. Some interesting pieces, my favourite being the Hogarth series of 'The Rakes Progress'.
Sir John Soanes left the museum in Lincoln's Fields to the nation by an act of parliament; he did not want his only surviving heir to inherit - it is thought because his sons life appeared to be heading in a very similar direction to that of the rake in the series.
