Young mallard

Is what I reckon this must be. And it's doing a poo - which I only realised when I started photoshopping it a bit. I decided not to photoshop out the poo...

I chose this pic partly to give some light relief as the swan family has lost another cygnet - they are now down to seven. It seems strange that they are losing cygnets now, when they are quite well grown.

However, another plus today was seeing a little grebe nest on the far side of the pond under overhanging bushes, on what looked like some floating vegetation.
