There were hundreds of animals in Dalkeith Park as I discovered when I went for a walk. For well over 200 years the annual Dalkeith Show has been held with entries from much of the south east and central Scotland highlighting the farming community. It was really interesting talking to various people including some young girls who were excited that their lambs had won a prize, and another lady explained how she spins and make garments from her Shetland sheep. I was given a very detailed description of ploughing matches using the old methods and another explained how he makes some of his craftwork. There were cows, ponies and handsome Clydesdale horses and dog agility displays but I was most interested in the parade of vintage tractors, especially this very old one with steel rimmed wheels. I don’t know how old it is but think it might have been made between 1923 and 1925 when solid rubber tyres replaced the steel wheels. It seemed tiny in comparison with the latest John Deere monster 9620RX on display with a 670 horsepower in contrast to about 13hp.
The extras show a Blackface and an award winning Jacob’s ram who had to be harnessed as he ‘was grumpy.’
