Lewis Pass, South Island

We left home after lunch, heading to Hanmer Springs for the night. We'd had very wet weather at home and there were reports of snow falling on the alpine passes. So we packed our chains and headed off.

We didn't come across any snow until we reached the top of the Lewis Pass. It was starting to settle, but generally the road was really good. The snow was really coming down as we progressed further along the road, although it wasn't settling. The men were out with their sweeper and grit trucks ready to maintain a thorough fare for traffic to still get through.

We arrived in Hanmer to a lovely fine day, although with a bitterly cold wind. I sure won't be going for a swim in the thermal pools with temperatures this low!
