Fireback no more

After I took the fire surround off the wall, I removed the fireback. This involved a lot of chipping away at cement with two hammers — a normal one and a stubby one — and a selection of chisels. It was hard work, but I got there in the end. I couldn't lift the fireback because it's made of concrete or something, so I lowered it to the floor and left it there for someone stronger than me to move it.
