Spice Island
This is Spice Island in the Old Town area of Portsmouth. It is where all the imported spices were unloaded from around the world. It really is a lovely little area of the city that also includes Spur Redoubt, from which - in 1805 - Nelson left Portsmouth to join Victory for the Battle Of Trafalgar, plus the Royal Garrison Church, much of which is roofless, though with the chancel still complete and in use.
I had a lovely time exploring the area and particularly liked this view looking into the harbour mouth. You could just imagine those 18th and 19th century sailors and officers wandering down here with a bottle in one hand and their sweetheart on the other. A very good day.
Hope yours was too xx
