Scalpel Blade

More advice to my younger self before the next generations graduation tomorrow.

So now with your degree in surgery you can get to use one of these on a live patient. Don’t think too hard about the significance of this, cutting open someone in order to fix them takes a certain clarity and surefootedness.
One thing for sure, once opened up, there’s no black or white, straight, gay or bi, no rich or poor, no male or female (actually there is a difference ther and if you don’t know it yet put that scapel down!).

What I really want to tell you though is, you can’t wield that blade without a team around you, you don’t even get to first base, theatre nurse will have everything lined up and correct ready for you, and make sure you don’t leave anything behind!, that anaesthetist, well without her your patient might be awake or not alive – neither ideal. Without the porter the patient would still be sat on the ward. Don’t get me started on all that cleaning that needs to go on, without which your patient would probably die of infection however clever you get to be with the blade. How does all that equipment, scheduling, cups of tea, electricity, running water…..I could go on, you see even those hospital managers and administrators got in to the job because they want to do their bit in the endeavour. I could go on, nothing you ever do in all your career will be solo, you are part of a team. You might be the one who pitches perfect, or score the home run, scores the goal, crosses the line – but you fail without the team. You have the opportunity to make the team play better or worse. Every day say thank you internally and externally to those who work with you. Despite that Lego film thing, every isn’t always awesome when you’re part of a team, but listen and watch for what makes it more awesome and it isn’t one star player outfits, or a demanding ego.
