The Culver Battery

Day four of the holiday, and a busy tour of the east side of 'Wight culminated in a visit to the Culver Battery.
These defensive gun positions were built in 1906, and manned throughout both world wars.
There are two gun enplacements, side by side, and each contained a Mark VI breach loading gun. These were the front line of defence for the south of England, and had a range of around one mile.
For obvious security reasons the site was closed to the public until 1966, and very little is known about day to day life at the enplacement. The current owners, The National Trust, are looking to track down anyone who served at the site (or their relatives) so they can piece together the full story of The Culver Battery's history.
