Postboxes

Another thing that I noticed that was different from the UK, is how people receive their mail. Instead of a mail box through the front door, people have their own post box a little distance (potentially quite far!) from their house. This makes the postman's job easier, and safer as there's no risk of being bitten by a dog, and it doesn't really make any difference to oneself. Maybe when it gets snowy, the postman doesn't have to drive up non-plowed roads?
Extra is of the entire post box shelter... looks quite like a bus stop!
