Marsh Helleborine.

Yes another orchid grown by Mrs. K. in our garden.
The scientific name is Epipactis palustris.
It grows in many places in England but has been declining as many marsh areas have been lost. It can be found in dune slacks especially where lime is dissolved in the water. The best place in Cumbria is at the northern tip of Walney Island near Barrow in Furness. Last time we looked there we found some thousands flowering.

Mrs.K grows them in a large pot which is outside and can be kept watered. It is a difficult plant to photograph. If you try to take the whole plant with a dozen spikes the flowers can look unimpressive. So I have opted for a close up which shows the very characteristic orchid flower structure.
