Nancy in sun-dapple

On the first day of Sue’s absence, I had a day packed with appointments, starting at 8 a.m. and continuing till the full moon of July shone invitingly on my bed.

The jewel at the center of the day was lunch with Nancy Newell. She is a survivor of the Three Mile Island nuclear disaster in 1979, and she dedicates her life to shutting down nuclear power stations all over the USA. The last remaining one in our area is Columbia Generating Station, a Fukushima-style operation, and Nancy says CGS is very close to a complete shutdown. Not because people have seen the danger of nuclear power, but because the plant is losing money, and that makes it more vulnerable to the tide of opinion. Nancy feels we’re just one more whopping petition from success, and she’s going up to a Grateful Dead concert in Washington State this weekend to collect signatures.
