Marigold and caterpillars

The latter will be tolerated as long as they stay on the marigolds.  As children we were sent out with a jam jar with paper lid tied on with string.  A hole was punched through the paper through which we popped caterpillars that ate cabbages, lettuce and suchlike. I can't remember how they were dispatched.
