Knights of the Round Table
The pawns have been to see a film
called Knights of the Round Table.
“Our knights should have a table, too;
Let's find one, if we're able.”
The pawns decide to shop online
and soon a table's found
of polished wood, handmade and, most
importantly: it's round!
They tell the knights to close their eyes
(the table has arrived),
then lead them very carefully
to where it stands outside.
“You're very kind,” the knights declare.
“Too high, though!” one's explaining,
when “No, it's not,” another cries,
“It's perfect, now it's raining!”
While everyone keeps nice and dry
the pawns devise a fable
which, one day, might become a film:
The Pawns of the Round Table.
*
The knights and pawns have yet to find
one small but sad mistake:
left soaking on the table top
sits one forgotten cake!
When they remember that it's there
they're sure to feel bereft,
perhaps they'll serve it as a drink
(well, if there's any left)!

Dear Reader, p'raps you recognise
the handiwork involved
in turning this fine table …?

This is the 33rd appearance of my Chessmen, who were last seen when the kings and queens were taking Time Out.
And, yes, after a week of summer sunshine, we're back to steady rain.
