US Holiday Day 10

From Fort Bragg to Eureka, via Willits
One of my treats this morning, a ride on the Skunk Train. Unfortunately they have had some problems with a tunnel so the whole route can not be followed and, more disappointing they can not use the old style western steam locos. Despite this the trip was not disappointing, I spent most of the time in an open sided carriage experiencing the sounds and smells. This guy was singing country music and train songs both on the outward and back journeys. When not singing he was happy to chat with the passengers, as was the train guard. He was very knowledgeable on the railway, its history and place in the region. He was also very handy with the chain saw when we encountered a fallen tree partially covering the line. One of the extra pictures is one of the train carriages.
This took up the whole morning, we then drove on to Avenue of the Giants, giant redwoods on both side of the road dwarfing all other living things. It was stunning but I struggled to get pictures because the trees were so tall. The extra shot is of a special tree, a hole cut in the bottom that cars can drive through. Ours did not go through, it is a beast with wide wing mirrors and we have a large insurance excess. The final shot is just one I liked
