Basing House

Trip out to Basing House today - somewhere else I've been meaning to visit for years, having driven past the signs so many times.

This was a huge house in Tudor times, partly modelled on Hampton Court Palace. Henry VIII stayed there, as did all of their children when they were on the throne.

However, it was destroyed in the Civil War as the owners were unashamed Royalists, so it is now in ruins.

This canon was used to defend the house from Oliver Cromwell.

It is now pointed at Basingstoke. I am sure people have been tempted...
