The Old Golf Course
The Blip picture shows the M4 motorway, Newport, near Junction 28 looking towards High Cross. To the left of it is the Old Tredegar park Golf Club ground which has been derelict for about 20 years. Recently, the bulldozers moved in and started groundworks/flood barrier protection for a large new housing estate of 150 new homes on the 92 acre site. Some 11 football picthes are to be created as well. The planning appeal was granted in 2007.
Tredegar Park Golf Club has been in existence since 1903 and after selling this site, about 1998, moved to Rogerstone, Newport where they built a new course and club house.
The extra is an overhead view of the groundworks. It shows Bassaleg Ambulance Station/Whiteheads Social Club (top left). Many years ago I owned a couple of houses opposite the golf course so the fact that it is now being developed is of real intrest to me. I spent many hours jogging along the footpaths through the course, and the Gaer Hillfort nearby. Memories, eh!
