The Pill Box

Adjacent to Ruskey Bridge, Co Leitrim (Rooskey).
During the early stages of WW2 as part of a contingency plan, this receptacle was erected by the engineering corps of the National Army. Its purpose was to house explosives, if necessary in an emergency situation i.e. invasion or incursion by hostile forces could be used to blow up Ruskey (Rooskey) Bridge.

At the same time a number of pairs of small chambers were drilled and made ready in the structure of the bridge itself for the same purpose.
