Even the Riding of the Marches stops for red!

Tonight was the Riding of the Marches in Musselburgh.
The Turf Cutter, assisted by his Assistant and protected by the Town Champion along with his Squires and the Town's Halberdiers and the procession travelled around 12 turf cutting stations.
The Riding of the Marches was first mentioned in the record books in 1682 and customarily takes place every 21 years. It saw its origins in the days when there was great rivalry between landlords who were always trying to encroach on one another's property. The Lairds conscripted men to protect their boundaries. Later the custom became a symbolic ceremony, enacted by elected or appointed men of the burgh, whereby a Town Champion dressed in full armour and a Turf Cutter checked the 12 points along the boundary of the burgh.  (taken from the ROM 2016 website)
We watched the procession go past from Mall Avenue which runs along side the river. Great to see everyone out joining in the event.
